After the release of the first Razor Crest playset hopes were high when a MicroFighter sized version was announced. This initial excitement quickly turned to disappointment on it’s release – for the afficiandos (and me), the model just didn’t look right.
This betrayed the fact that it, most probably, had been developed to fulfill the requirements of a licencing agreement which apparently forbids the sale of individual mini-figures in favour of sets that allow for some building, hence the creation of the MicroFighter range, sets that boast a vehicle and a mini-figure although hugely out of scale with each other, so very much aimed at the children’s market rather than collectors.
A cynical view might say that here was a way to shift units of Din Darin figures to a very eager audience without upsetting the legal people
Needless to say, I bought the kit and enjoyed building it but I had some reservations that it wasn’t very ‘screen correct.’ Then Lego released a smaller scale ‘polybag’ version (available as a covermount with the Blue Ocean comic). This one looked better, although the engines still looked a bit odd. Needless to say, I also bought this version.
For fun I decided to kit-bash the two together and see if I could arrive at a MicroFighter size model that had more in common with the Lucasfilm original. The results I think speak for themselves. I was able to mimic the overall lines of the ship, get the engines mounted in a way that looked somewhat better, and also include a working rear hatch.
